Dubai, a desert city where flowers bloom abundantly, is not only focusing on safe transportation but also on making the journey on its roads visually appealing. With skyscrapers and bridges alongside lush green spaces, the emirate harmoniously blends nature with modernity. In a Dh245-million initiative, seven new projects aimed at planting and beautifying key intersections on Sheikh Zayed and Al Khail Roads have been completed as part of the 'Green Dubai Project'. These projects aim to create a unique visual identity that combines urban character with expansive green spaces, adhering to the highest sustainable planting practices globally.
Over 2.5 million flowers and ornamental plants, along with 6,500 trees, have been planted, supported by advanced, water-efficient irrigation systems. Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, stated, 'These projects reflect our commitment to developing green infrastructure and fostering a healthy, comfortable environment for residents and visitors, enhancing quality of life by expanding green spaces, upholding environmental sustainability, and optimizing natural resources through smart irrigation systems that ensure optimal water consumption.'
The project was executed in line with the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. In 2023, Dubai Municipality planted over 185,000 trees, averaging 500 trees per day. The emirate’s green space expanded by 234 hectares in 2023, up from 170 hectares in 2022.
Extensive planting was carried out across key intersections on Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai’s main arterial route. Four major projects were completed, including beautifying the intersections with Al Yelayes Street and Al Jameel Street, as well as the sides of Sheikh Zayed Road from the intersection with Umm Suqeim Street to Al Yelayes Street. Planting works were also completed on the sides of Sheikh Zayed Road in both directions, covering an area of 250,000sqm. The projects on SZR covered a total area of 843,000sqm, nearly 1.5 million flower and plant seedlings, and 3,500 trees. Additionally, 290,000sqm of soil mulching were applied, effectively preventing soil erosion while adding a natural and refined aesthetic to the area.
The beautification of the Al Khail Street intersections encompassed three main projects, covering over 625,000sqm. These projects included the intersections of Al Khail Street with Al Meydan Street, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Street, and Umm Suqeim Street. Decorative planting consisted of 1 million flower and plant seedlings, 3,000 trees, and 143,654sqm of soil mulch.
