Both residents and tourists in Dubai depend on the city's comprehensive public transport network for their travel needs. Dubai's public transport system is governed by numerous stringent rules and regulations designed to guarantee a secure and pleasant travel experience for all. Consequently, any breach of these rules can result in significant fines, with some severe infractions potentially costing travelers up to Dh500.
Recently, the Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai announced the installation of an automated passenger counting (APC) system in new buses to combat fare evasion. This system operates by tracking the actual number of passengers and comparing it with the automated fare collection data. Currently, Dubai's bus system operates on the honor system, trusting passengers to tap their Nol cards when boarding and alighting. However, there have been cases of passengers neglecting to do so, leading to fines of Dh200 for those caught evading fares.
