Dubai has initiated a trial run for the world's first 3-D printed abras. These electric boats have the capacity to transport 20 passengers simultaneously and reduce operational and maintenance expenses by 30 percent. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is overseeing this trial phase to evaluate the boat's performance.

"The abra will be tested at the Sheikh Zayed Road Marine Transport Station on the TR6 line," stated Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA. "It features an electric propulsion system driven by two 10-kilowatt motors and lithium batteries. During this testing period, the abra's performance will be closely monitored and compared to that of the existing 20-passenger fibreglass abras." The boat, designed to maintain its traditional appearance, measures 11 meters in length and 3.1 meters in width. It significantly reduces manufacturing time by 90 percent and aligns with the RTA's strategy for environmental sustainability in maritime transport.

In conjunction with the trial of the 3-D printed boats, the RTA is also upgrading traditional abra stations along Dubai Creek to enhance safety and security. These stations serve over 14 million passengers each year. The project involves improving four traditional abra stations. The Bur Dubai Marine Transport Station was upgraded in February 2023, and the Deira Old Souq Station was completed in February of this year. Improvements to the Dubai Old Souq Station and Al Sabkha Station are scheduled for completion by August 2025. The upgrades include replacing all floating docks, providing retail spaces, employee facilities, and bike racks, and enhancing passenger waiting areas with priority seating and dedicated spaces for People of Determination. The docking spaces have been widened by 15 percent, and shaded waiting areas have been doubled in size. The use of sustainable, low-cost materials in construction has reduced annual maintenance costs by 10 percent.

The marine transport sector in Dubai has seen growth in transport options, stations, and passenger numbers since the completion of the Dubai Water Canal. With the anticipated completion of tourist facilities along the canal and the construction of transport stations, the sector is poised for further expansion. This growth is expected to make marine transport, including abras and boats, the favored choice for many to enjoy the scenic views of Dubai Creek, the Dubai Water Canal, and Dubai beaches.
