As the Game of Thrones spin-off gears up for filming and Amazon's Lord of the Rings series moves into pre-production, the fantasy genre continues to dominate TV and cinema. One long-awaited project is the movie adaptation of the classic fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. It has recently been reported that Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, known for their work on Game Night, are set to direct the D&D film.

According to Deadline, Goldstein and Daley are currently in talks for the role. They will take over from Chris McKay, who had been attached to the project since February 2018 but is now focusing on the Chris Pratt sci-fi thriller Ghost Draft. Goldstein and Daley have previously penned the screenplay for the Marvel hit Spider-Man: Homecoming and were part of the directing team for DC's Flash movie before leaving the much-delayed project.

The Dungeons & Dragons reboot is currently slated for release on November 21, 2021, though given the early stages of development, this date could be subject to change. The 2001 Dungeons & Dragons movie was a commercial flop and received negative reviews from critics.

Meanwhile, Amazon's Lord of the Rings series has unveiled its production team. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director J.A. Bayona will direct the first two episodes, and the writing team includes talent from shows such as Breaking Bad, Hannibal, Stranger Things, and Game of Thrones. Although a release date has not been confirmed, the series is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's books and Peter Jackson's movie adaptations.
