Egyptian fencer Nada Hafez had a double cause for celebration after securing her maiden Olympic victory in the women's sabre event on Monday, as she disclosed that she achieved this feat while seven months pregnant.

The 26-year-old Hafez, who was participating in her third Olympics, defeated American world number 10 Elizabeth Tartakovsky 15-13, but then lost 15-7 to Jeon Hayoung of South Korea in the round of 16 at the Grand Palais. In a later statement, Hafez expressed her pride not only in her performance but also in competing while expecting.

"What seems to be two competitors on the podium were actually three! It was me, my opponent, and my soon-to-arrive little baby!" Hafez shared on Instagram.

"I'm penning this to express the pride I feel for reaching the round of 16... This particular Olympics was unique. A three-time Olympian, but this time with a little Olympian on board!"

Hafez, who had previously competed in the 2016 and 2021 Games, revealed her pregnancy to highlight the strength and perseverance of Egyptian women.

"The challenges of pregnancy are already demanding, but maintaining the equilibrium between life and sports was exceptionally tough, yet entirely worthwhile."
