Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi informed US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that Cairo opposes any efforts to escalate tensions in the region and stands in support of Lebanon in the wake of the pager explosions, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency on Wednesday.
At least nine individuals lost their lives and nearly 3,000 were injured when pagers utilized by Hezbollah members simultaneously detonated across Lebanon on Tuesday.
The statement further emphasized, "The President reaffirmed Egypt's opposition to attempts to escalate the conflict and broaden its reach regionally, highlighting the necessity for all involved parties to act with responsibility, and reiterated Egypt's backing for Lebanon."
Blinken's visit to Egypt aims to further the efforts towards achieving a ceasefire in Gaza and to strengthen diplomatic relations with Cairo.
