Elton John's eye problems have worsened significantly. During Sunday night's charity gala premiere of his production 'The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical,' the 77-year-old musician disclosed that he has lost his eyesight due to an infection. 'As some of you may know, I have had issues and now I have lost my sight,' John told the audience at the Dominion Theatre, as reported by the Daily Mail. 'I haven't been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed listening to it,' the EGOT winner added.
John was accompanied on stage by the musical's cast and his husband, David Furnish, who assisted John in getting down from the stage. In his speech, John thanked Furnish, 62, saying, 'To my husband, who's been my rock, because I haven't been able to come to many of the previews because as you know, I've lost my eyesight, so it's hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it.' 'And, boy, it sounded good tonight!' John exclaimed. 'Okay, thank you for coming!'
John composed the score for 'The Devil Wears Prada,' which did not receive favorable reviews during its Chicago tryout in 2022. The Post's theater critic Johnny Oleksinski described the musical as 'a haute mess.' The West End production opened on October 24, with Vanessa Williams starring as Miranda Priestly. The charity event on Sunday supported the Elton John AIDS Foundation, with stars like Lily Collins, Elizabeth Hurley, Donatella Versace, and Anna Wintour in attendance.
John has been candid about his vision struggles over the past few months. In September, he revealed on Instagram that he was dealing with a severe optic infection that left him with 'limited vision' in one eye. 'I am healing, but it's an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,' John said. During a 'Good Morning America' interview last month, the 'Rocket Man' singer mentioned that he could no longer see out of his right eye. 'I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the South of France,' he explained to Robin Roberts. 'It's been four months now since I haven't been able to see. My left eye is not the greatest.'
'There's hope and encouragement that it will be OK,' John continued, 'but I'm kind of stuck in the moment, because I can do something like this, but going into the studio and recording, I don't know. Because I can't see a lyric for start.' The music superstar added, 'It kind of floored me, and I can't see anything. I can't read anything, I can't watch anything.'
John has also faced challenges in his professional life. His $25 million Broadway show 'Tammy Faye' announced its closing date just five days after opening night. The show will conclude on December 8.
