In the near future, physical wallets may become redundant in the UAE, as almost everything can be accessed through smartphones. Instead of carrying multiple plastic cards, a digital wallet can store all necessary IDs and passes. Picture this: being asked for your Emirates ID without the need to rummage through your bag for the lost card holder. Simply store it on your phone and access it with a tap.
Going wallet-free in the UAE is feasible depending on your phone type and daily card needs. Some digital passes and IDs are exclusive to iPhone users, while others are compatible only with Samsung and other Android devices. Here's a guide on seven items UAE residents can store in their smartphone wallets:
Emirates ID: Essential for various transactions, including sending money or visiting a hospital, this ID is crucial for all residents. Having it digitally accessible on your phone is incredibly convenient. For iPhone users, download the UAE ICP app, log in with your UAE Pass, and add your Emirates ID to Apple Wallet. This feature is not yet available on Samsung and other Android phones, where only the 'View QR Code' option is present.
Driver's licence: Crucial for driving in Dubai, a digital version can be handy during traffic incidents. Both iPhone and Samsung users can store their licence in their wallets via the RTA app. However, the process for adding licences from other emirates to a phone wallet is still pending.
Vehicle licence: Dubai car owners can also digitize their vehicle licence through the RTA app, storing essential details like expiry date and chassis number.
Nol card: For Dubai commuters, a digital Nol card would be ideal. Huawei users can add this feature under specific conditions, while Samsung users need the Nol Pay app. iPhone users can currently only view the QR code.
Movie tickets: Booking online and saving tickets to your phone wallet eliminates the need to rush to the cinema counter. Vox Cinemas supports this feature, allowing you to keep a record of all your movie experiences.
Boarding passes: With online check-in recommended, storing digital boarding passes in your phone wallet is efficient. Both Emirates and Etihad allow passengers to add their passes to Apple and Google wallets, subject to device compatibility.
Credit and debit cards: The primary purpose of phone wallets is to store bank cards, allowing easy access even offline. Simply add your card details to your digital wallet app (Apple, Samsung, or Google).
