Out on the wild, windy moors... Emerald Fennell's adaptation of Wuthering Heights is beginning to materialize. After announcing in July that her next project would be a modern interpretation of Emily Brontë's timeless classic, the beloved British filmmaker has reportedly found her Cathy and Heathcliff—and they hail from Down Under. According to Deadline, Australian actors Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are set to portray the star-crossed lovers in Fennell's forthcoming film, which is currently in pre-production and slated for a 2025 UK shoot.
For Elordi, this role will mark a swift reunion with his Saltburn director. Given the dark themes of that previous film—passion, revenge, obsession, and death—it's easy to envision him embodying the brooding malcontent of the 19th century. Meanwhile, Robbie, fresh off her role in last year's whimsical Barbie (which featured a cameo by Fennell), will soon be seen in the upcoming Colin Farrell-starring film A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.
As for Fennell's vision, it remains unclear whether she plans a faithful adaptation of Brontë's novel, which revolves around the tumultuous history of the farmhouse and the destructive love affair between Heathcliff and Cathy. However, when the project was first revealed, Fennell shared an illustration by Katie Buckley featuring Heathcliff's iconic words, "Be with me always — Take any form — Drive me mad," suggesting a respectful nod to the original material. But for all other questions—Will Elordi adopt a Liverpudlian accent? Will there be any cemetery antics?—we'll have to wait and see. In the meantime, perhaps a few repeat listens to Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights are in order. Heathcliff! It's me, I'm Cathy, I've come home...
