Emirati Shamsa Al Falasi, a recent graduate, joined a multinational bank's franchise in the UAE and has since risen to the position of CEO. Having started as an intern, she has shattered the glass ceiling in a traditionally male-dominated sector, becoming an inspiration for young Emirati women. Over the past two decades, her career has been marked by continuous learning and self-assessment.
"I've learned that evaluating my skills every six months and holding myself accountable has been crucial," said Al Falasi, CEO of Citibank N.A., UAE Onshore. "It's important to pause and assess where you are in your career and where you want to be, questioning if you have the right skills and what steps you need to take next."
Before her CEO role, Al Falasi held various positions, including serving as a senior business and relationship manager for the MENA and Turkey region and heading the global subsidiaries group for the UAE and Iraq. Her career has spanned the globe with assignments in Brazil, Ireland, and the UK.
Al Falasi emphasizes the importance of seeking feedback and is a mentor to young professionals. Her journey, though challenging, demonstrates that the impossible can be achieved. In the UAE, where 77% of graduates are women and 50% of the Federal National Council are female, Al Falasi is part of a transformative era.
The UAE Security and Commodities Authority mandated in 2021 that listed companies must include at least one woman on their board of directors. "We're part of the success, and the sky's the limit," Al Falasi said. Despite her busy schedule, mentoring remains a significant part of her life.
Travel and internships during her college years helped shape her career. Al Falasi, one of seven siblings, was inspired by her family, including two sisters who transitioned from banking to teaching. She took a bold step early in her career with a four-month assignment in Brazil, embracing the adventure despite initial concerns from her manager.
In the UAE, there is a strong focus on diversity, inclusion, and equality, values rooted in the late Sheikh Zayed's philosophy. Al Falasi highlights the importance of role models in supporting the next generation, noting the UAE's efforts to prepare newer generations for leadership roles.
