A young Emirati chemical engineer, who ventured into uncharted investment territories, has played a crucial role in advancing large-scale clean energy initiatives across multiple nations. During her studies at the UAE University in Al Ain, Maryam Al Mazrouei initially aimed to secure a position in the country's oil and gas industry. However, fate steered her in a different direction. While undergoing industrial training and passing by Abu Dhabi's Masdar City, she was drawn to the burgeoning eco-friendly structures there. A brief mentorship at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology redirected her career ambitions from the conventional oil and gas sector to the field of clean energy.
"When I began my engineering studies, my passion was in the oil and gas sector. But my time at the Masdar Institute altered my viewpoint, and I realized that renewables were the industry I wished to concentrate on," Maryam, who now leads development and investment in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region at Masdar, shared with Khaleej Times. This significant shift prompted her to enroll in a master's program in engineering systems and management at the Masdar Institute, where she excelled, graduating at the top of her class in 2016 and receiving notable accolades. Despite the challenges, including adapting to a mixed-gender academic and professional environment with diverse peers, Maryam embraced the experience as enriching.
Starting at Masdar as an analyst in 2016, Maryam quickly ascended the learning curve, recognizing the necessity to augment her technical skills with financial knowledge. She pursued professional certifications and delved into the realm of investment. Her commitment was rewarded with leadership roles in pivotal projects across the Middle East, CIS, and Southeast Asia. Over the last four years, she has driven business development and investment strategies in the CIS region, significantly expanding Masdar's footprint in countries like Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, among others.
"I introduce Masdar's expertise and innovative technologies to emerging markets globally. These initiatives contribute to lowering carbon dioxide emissions and offer clean, dependable energy to numerous households, showcasing the transformative potential of renewable energy," Maryam emphasized. Despite her prominent position, she remains closely tied to her heritage, ensuring regular visits to her family in Ras Al Khaimah.
"They have been tremendously supportive of my professional path," Maryam remarked, exemplifying the new wave of Emirati women unafraid to disrupt the norm and relentlessly pursue their aspirations. "It's crucial to discover your passion. When passion is present, navigating your career path becomes simpler. If anyone is uncertain about the renewable sector, they should feel free to contact me," Maryam advised.
