In a time when many opt for the security of a car, one Emirati motorcyclist has chosen a different path, embracing the freedom of the open road with boundless enthusiasm. Hassan Abdel Salam Al Zaghrouni, aged 50, embarked on an 8-day adventure in February, traversing Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait on his reliable Honda Gold Wing. Initially planned as a group trip with fellow bikers, Al Zaghrouni decided to pursue the journey alone when his companions could not join.
"The road presents dangers with trucks and cars, but my skills and experience are my confidence," Al Zaghrouni shared with Khaleej Times. "I set out in February, which coincided with my birthday. The trip spanned 8 days, with 2 days dedicated to each country." During his travels, he immersed himself in the local motorcycle scene, attending a bike show in Qatar where he was recognized for his cross-border travels. "Their appreciation was evident when they saw me arrive from the Emirates," he reminisced.
Al Zaghrouni's adventurous spirit has not been confined to the Gulf region; he has also explored Russia and California, including a memorable ride along the legendary Route 66. His passion for motorcycles began early, starting with an 80cc bike at the age of 10. Although this passion waned as he pursued other interests, such as bird breeding, the call of the open road eventually rekindled his love for biking.
"Riding a bike brings me peace," Al Zaghrouni explained. "It clears my mind of stress and problems, providing me with positive energy and a sense of freedom." His motorcycle enthusiasm extends to local exploration within the UAE, where he frequently commutes on his Harley-Davidson for work. Despite the harsh summer heat, Al Zaghrouni continues to ride daily, unable to abandon his bike for even a few months.
Within the Emirates, he has journeyed extensively, from Abu Dhabi to Ras Al Khaimah, Dibba, Hatta, and Fujairah, often joining different groups and enjoying stops for refreshments. "In the UAE, we have numerous motorcyclist teams, and we all connect. On holidays like Union Day or National Day, we gather and embark on trips together," he described. Al Zaghrouni's passion also involves customizing his bike, participating in the Customized Motorcycle Competition at the Emirates Custom Show.
