Navigating the narrow, uneven streets, where the air was thick with the echoes of daily hardships, I felt a heaviness in the atmosphere. The homes here were mere shacks, pieced together from tarpaulins and rusted metal, offering scant shelter to the families who lived within. As we walked further, we encountered children in tattered clothing, their bare feet kicking a football. Despite their circumstances, their spirits were unyielding, their faces beaming with joy—a testament to the transformative power of sport.
Sports have always held a special place in my life. Last summer, I had the privilege of training for my badminton nationals at the prestigious Padukone-Dravid Center of Sports Excellence in India. A few weeks later, my dedication and my coach’s relentless efforts culminated in a national ranking. With the excitement of my badminton meets still fresh and vacation days stretching ahead, I sought out volunteer opportunities to coach young children. It was during one such search that I stumbled upon Being Child Care, a slum’s child care center, after watching a young boy deftly maneuver a football with bare feet.
Upon entering the center, I was met with a throng of eager faces. In one corner, an assortment of worn-out sports equipment lay scattered. Throughout the afternoon, what repeatedly caught my eye were the children’s radiant smiles as they passed around a tattered football and swung wooden sticks that were meant to be cricket bats. Their laughter seemed to defy the obstacles before them, and in that instant, it dawned on me that sports could be more than just a leisure activity; they could be a beacon of hope, a refuge from daily struggles, and a bridge that connected people across different walks of life.
Returning to Dubai, I was more determined than ever to harness the positive influence of sports. Inspired to empower others, I founded Equip2Empower, a youth organization dedicated to providing sports equipment to underprivileged children. With the unwavering support of my parents and the guidance of my counselors at Hale Education Group, what began as a mere idea flourished into a global initiative. Today, Equip2Empower boasts over 25 chapters worldwide, with students proudly representing our mission in their schools and cities. We also have a sports spotlight, soon to evolve into a magazine, where we share the stories of athletes and highlight the myriad opportunities that sports offer.
Currently, we collaborate with various beneficiaries—Harmony House India, Being Child Care, Rescue Foundation, and Al Jalila Foundation—and four strategic partners. Together, we strive to meet the needs of these young athletes, ensuring their dreams of becoming sports stars are realized. We have successfully conducted several sports equipment collection drives and are in the process of donating to both local and international orphanages and organizations.
In line with our expansion, Equip2Empower has introduced mentorship programs, volunteer opportunities, and donation drive events. We have also facilitated direct connections between aspiring athletes and potential sponsors. Our ultimate vision is to construct a multipurpose sports court in a rural area, where children can come together to achieve their dreams as a united front.
Reflecting on my journey, I realize that it all began in that modest community care center in the heart of Mumbai’s slums. It was there that I learned that sports could be a lifeline, not just for the children who played, but for all of us who believe in the power of passion, determination, and unity. On that day, those children weren’t just playing a game—they were teaching me the true essence of resilience.
As we gear up to host our inaugural charity sports event in partnership with Red Line Padel Club, Al Barsha on November 16th, we invite you to join us in our mission to support both athletes and supporters alike. We are equipped to empower. Are you?
