England has successfully defended their WXV1 title with a 21-12 victory over Canada, securing their 20th consecutive win and solidifying their status as the top contenders for the 2025 Rugby World Cup next August. The Red Roses showcased their class in a closely contested match, outlasting the home side with three tries and resolute defense.

Canada, who had pushed England to the limit in the 2022 World Cup semi-final and had recently defeated New Zealand to win the Pacific Four Series, entered this clash as the world's number two team. With significant WXV victories over France and Ireland, they were seen as the only team capable of ending England's winning streak. However, England had their own momentum, having easily dispatched the USA in the first round and then delivering a masterclass against New Zealand in the previous match.

Canada started strong, winning a penalty within 20 seconds of kickoff and mounting pressure on England's line. Despite their six successive victories, Canada had lost their last 12 matches against the Red Roses, so they opted to chase a try instead of settling for three points. Justine Pelletier's quick score from close range gave Canada an early 5-0 lead.

England responded swiftly with a try from Maud Muir, assisted by Alex Matthews and Helena Rowland, to take a 7-5 lead. As the game progressed, both teams traded attacks, but fatigue and mistakes limited scoring opportunities. Canada's relentless offloading kept them in the game, but England's defense held firm.

In the second half, Canada capitalized on a yellow card to Ellie Kildunne, using their numerical advantage to score through captain Tessier, restoring a 12-7 lead. However, England's experience and composure shone through as they clawed their way back into the game, eventually taking the lead with a try from Sarah Burn.

With just 10 minutes left, England's control became evident as Canada's errors mounted. A crucial 50-22 kick by England kept them on the attack, and a final try from Zoe Aldcroft in the 80th minute sealed the victory for the Red Roses. Aldcroft, the 2021 World Rugby player of the year, was later named player of the match.

As the 16 best women's rugby teams now turn their attention to the 2025 World Cup, the draw for which will be released next week, England's dominance and preparation for the tournament are clear.
