Epic Games is allocating $1.5 billion into Epic Games to construct a Disney-inspired metaverse within Fortnite. Recently, one of Disney's top executives shared additional insights into the company's vision. Disney executive Josh D'Amaro, a potential successor to Disney's current CEO Bob Iger, disclosed to The Hollywood Reporter that Disney aims to collaborate with Epic to build a multifaceted digital space. This space will encompass gaming, social interaction, and user-generated content.
D'Amaro emphasized Disney's goal to create a comprehensive 'universe' where all their narratives can be brought to life. These stories will manifest in various forms, including games, interactive experiences, and user-created content. He envisions a platform where fans can engage with their favorite franchises 365 days a year.
At the D23 Expo, D'Amaro highlighted Walt Disney's adventurous spirit and risk-taking nature, suggesting that Disney's current endeavors in Fortnite are a continuation of this legacy. He stressed the importance of innovation and adaptability in the face of shifting consumer preferences.
Disney's diverse portfolio, including characters and content from Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar, will be featured in Fortnite. Although specific projects remain undisclosed, many anticipate a 'virtual Disney World' within the game. Fortnite has evolved into a versatile platform, hosting various games and experiences beyond its original battle royale format.
In the meantime, fans can enjoy Pixar characters like Mr. Incredible, Elastagirl, and Frozone in Fortnite. Disney villains such as Maleficent and Cruella de Vil are slated to join the game this fall. Disney's approach to game development has shifted from in-house production to licensing arrangements with external studios.
Upcoming licensed games include Indiana Jones and the Great Circle from Microsoft. Despite some setbacks, like Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, Disney remains committed to exploring new gaming ventures.
