A total of 19 European bars have made it to the 16th edition of The World’s Best Bars, a decrease from last year’s 22. Notably, Barcelona’s Sips, last year’s top bar, has slipped from the number one spot to third place. Replacing it at the top are Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico City and Bar Leone in Hong Kong. Sips and Handshake Speakeasy have swapped positions, with the Mexican bar now ranking third and the Catalan cocktail spot holding the same position in 2022. Bar Leone in Hong Kong makes its debut in second place. Despite the drop, European bars continue to impress with 11 cities from seven countries in the top 50. The UK remains well-represented with five bars, including those in London and Edinburgh. Spain, Italy, and Greece also make strong showings with three, four, and two entries respectively. Outside Europe, New York and Asia’s high-end cities like Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, and Tokyo maintain their presence on the list. Handshake Speakeasy’s top spot for Mexico City highlights South America’s growing influence in the cocktail scene, with 11 bars in the top 50. Over 700 industry experts anonymously contributed to the list, which also includes individual awards like the Altos Bartenders’ Bartender Award, won by Iain McPherson of Panda & Sons in Edinburgh.
