The European Film Awards, celebrating the pinnacle of European cinema, are just around the corner. The event will unfold this weekend (Saturday, December 7th) in the Swiss city of Lucerne, and Euronews Culture will be there to bring you all the updates.

Last year, we successfully predicted many winners, including Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall sweeping the major awards. While deserved, this dominance somewhat overshadowed other deserving films. We hope this year’s winners are more varied, spreading the joy of the awards.

This year, for the first time, films nominated for Best European Documentary and Best Animated Feature Film are also eligible for the Best European Film category, expanding the 2024 nominations list. Notable inclusions are Mati Diop’s Golden Bear winner Dahomey and Latvian Gints Zilbalodis’ animated masterpiece Flow.

Among the top contenders are Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez and Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door, both nominated in multiple categories. Emilia Pérez, a trans musical set in Mexico, is a standout with its unique blend of genres and themes. Meanwhile, The Room Next Door, though not Almodóvar’s best, offers a poignant exploration of female friendship and euthanasia.

Other strong contenders include Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig, a powerful critique of Iranian society, and Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, a bold and gory exploration of Hollywood’s obsession with youth.

The 2024 European Film Awards will be announced in Lucerne on December 7th. Stay tuned to Euronews Culture for comprehensive coverage and exclusive interviews.
