Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen's friendship is one of the most enduring and cherished in Hollywood. As Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, they have shared numerous battles, both together and against each other, delivering some of the most memorable moments in contemporary cinema. It's no wonder that their on-screen reunion in the 2022 series Obi-Wan Kenobi, along with the recent reevaluation of the Prequel Trilogy, has sparked a wave of nostalgia and affection across the Star Wars fandom. Yesterday, as McGregor, known for his roles in Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge, and Doctor Sleep, among others, received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, surrounded by loved ones, Christensen was there to honor his co-star and close friend.
During a heartfelt speech, Christensen reminisced about the first time he met McGregor on the set of Attack of the Clones, describing the warm embrace he received. He immediately knew they would share a unique connection. "He was incredibly kind to me from the start, and it was clear I was meeting someone extraordinary, not just as an actor, but as a person, and a friend," Christensen said. He humorously added, "A friend who would later cut off both my legs and leave me for dead on the side of a volcano, but I suppose I had it coming." Referencing their dramatic duel in Revenge of the Sith.
Christensen also paid tribute to McGregor's portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi over the past 25 years. "To see him embody this character is like witnessing magic," Christensen exclaimed. "The kind of magic that doesn't rely on tricks or sleight of hand, but on making you believe in something greater. Because he wasn't just playing Obi-Wan; he was Obi-Wan. I mean, he is Obi-Wan. And I sincerely hope we get to see more of him, because this man is pure Star Wars gold." (Note to Kathleen Kennedy: we hope for more Obi-Wan too — and please renew The Acolyte.)
Concluding his speech, Christensen expressed his deep respect and admiration for McGregor, who has been a constant presence in his journey through that distant galaxy. "So, my friend Ewan, I want to thank you for being the best Jedi Master anyone could have hoped for," Christensen said. "You've always had my back, and I'm grateful for that. I'm just so happy to be here with you now. It's been an honor and a thrill to work with you, to wield a lightsaber with you, and most importantly, to call you my friend. I love you, brother." And you know what? We love these guys too.
