The UAE auto market currently boasts around 25 Chinese brands, with a new entrant joining the ranks every week. Today, we delve into EXEED, the luxury division of Chery Automobile. Our initial encounter was with the 2024 EXEED RX, a compact crossover SUV offered in three trim levels: Comfort, Luxury, and Flagship. The Flagship model we tested featured a meticulously finished matte grey exterior.

The EXEED RX adheres to the “Aesthetics of Light” design philosophy, resulting in a large, sleek, and almost monolithic body, reminiscent of the Lexus RX, which shares the same name. The grille is intricately designed with floating diamond elements and side air intakes that evoke Cadillac. The LED headlamps, though seemingly simple, are harmonious, and the LED DRLs boast a Knight-Rider-like sweeping light signature. The rear features tail lamps that span the width and a set of sporty quad exhaust tips. The 20-inch multi-spoke wheels add an elegant touch.

Inside, the RX offers a modern design with a distinctive flair. Highlights include a two-tone architecture, a giant digital slate with twin 14.3-inch screens, and a gracefully sloping centre console with three knurled rotary knobs. The seats are upholstered in smooth nappa leather, and the rare two-spoke steering wheel is both intuitive and comfortable to grip. The “Queen’s Seat” offers airliner-like business class seating for the front passenger, making it ideal for a power nap. The rear seats are also comfortable, with ample knee and headroom.

The RX Flagship is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol direct injection engine paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, delivering 261 horses and 400 Nm. Despite its size, the RX maneuvers well in the city and offers a smooth ride. However, the power delivery can be inconsistent, and the voice control lacks finesse. Safety features are comprehensive, including a Heads-up Display, eight airbags, and an ADAS system.

In conclusion, the EXEED RX is a stylish and spacious compact crossover SUV with numerous creature comforts and safety features. While the turbo 2.0L engine has usable power, its temperamental delivery and the unresponsive voice control are drawbacks. The seven-year/200,000km warranty offers some reassurance, but reliability and residual value remain uncertain.
