What truly defines the limits of superyacht design? For these visionary designers, 2024 was a year of pushing boundaries, embracing unconventional ideas, and leaving the ordinary far behind. They are revolutionizing the industry with submersible concepts, 'post-industrial' structures, and all-electric architectures. BOAT delves into the standout features that made this year's most remarkable superyachts truly exceptional.

Length: 85m
Designer: Officina Armare
Standout Feature: 'Man Cave' on the Lower Deck
At the beginning of 2024, Officina Armare unveiled its 85-metre concept, Project Armand. Inspired by automotive design, the yacht's standout feature is the 'man cave' located on the lower deck. If constructed, this space would include a lounge, diving station, and a 'floating' garage. Project Armand also boasts groundbreaking innovations such as a two-story owner’s penthouse, a glass concave main saloon, and an extendable helipad on the bow. The design aims to capture 'the essence of a personal island.'

Length: 166m
Designer: Migaloo PSY
Standout Feature: Operates Underwater for Four Weeks
Migaloo PSY introduced the 165.8-metre submersible superyacht, Migaloo M5, from its drawing boards. Believing in the future of 'submersibles' as a new category of private design, Migaloo M5 is designed to function underwater for up to four weeks. The yacht includes a 200-square-metre spa, an outdoor cinema, and a helipad. It also features two 'Midget Submarines' for deep-sea exploration and a 12.5-metre limousine tender alongside two expedition vehicles for surface adventures.

Length: 80m
Designer: Touch Studio, Oceanco
Standout Feature: 'Entirely Openable' Beach Area
Dunes, inspired by Brazil's Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses, is part of Oceanco's Simply Custom range. The yacht features stern terraces that create an 'entirely openable' beach area. Taking a holistic approach to design, the interior incorporates warm colours and turquoise tones, reflecting the sand and sea. If built, the shipyard promises a yacht that will integrate the latest technological advancements into its foundation.

Length: 80m
Builder: Damen Yachting, Azure Yacht Design, Harrison Eidsgaard
Standout Feature: Up to 40 Days of Self-Autonomy at Sea
At the Palm Beach International Boat Show, Damen Yachting showcased the Xplorer 80, designed to thrive in extreme environments or refined landscapes. The yacht can operate autonomously at sea for up to 40 days and features a 'home-from-home' interior. Its exterior includes a bridge wing doubling as a viewing room, a 30-metre-high crow's nest, and an open bow. The yacht also boasts a gym, wellness setup, and dive centre.

Length: 75m
Designer: Feadship, Studio de Voogt
Standout Feature: Infinity-Edge Hexagonal Pools
Feadship revealed its 75-metre fuel-cell yacht concept, C, at the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show. Inspired by a diamond's facets, the yacht uses glazing to draw light deep into its interior. It operates entirely on methanol fuel cells and lithium-metal batteries. Key features include a beach club with sea-level dining and a crow's nest rising from a private observation deck. The main deck showcases a pair of infinity-edge hexagonal pools with angular seating areas.

Length: 60m
Designer: Dixon Yacht Design, Lateral Naval Architects
Standout Feature: All-Electric Design
Project Maverick's standout feature is its all-electric energy architecture. Designed to harness solar power through a 200-square-metre array, regenerate kinetic energy while sailing, and rely on an Energy Storage System, the yacht is intended for bold clients willing to explore uncharted waters. It will be constructed from partially recycled aluminium, with a main saloon featuring side decks to reduce solar heat gain.

Length: 150m
Designer: Oceanco, Mario Biferali
Standout Feature: First 'Post-Industrial' Nacht Design
Anthos focuses on uniting commercial shipping and luxury yachting. This conversion project marks the first in a series of 'post-industrial' designs known as Nacht. The yacht's exterior features an extended main deck, sharp lines, and a 'tower' structure dedicated to a three-floor owner's apartment. Other highlights include 'super-VIP suites', a helideck, and a raised swimming pool.
