What defines fashion as “memorable”, and how does it serve as a catalyst for societal change? Furthermore, how does fashion mirror society itself, adapting to social, political, economic, and cultural shifts? These are among the core themes explored in “Memorabile. Ipermoda” at Rome’s MAXXI Museum, a collaboration with the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana.

The exhibition, which opened on November 27, guides visitors through the evolution of design from 2015 to the present, delving into significant changes in style, innovation, and creative direction within the fashion industry. While the initial attraction lies in the iconic designs showcased by brands like Gucci, Valentino, Versace, and Balenciaga, along with jewelry and handbags by Bvlgari, the exhibition goes beyond visual appeal. It addresses critical issues such as sustainability, overproduction, technology, and the ethical responsibilities of the fashion industry.

“These are challenging times, and the exhibition raises questions and issues that have yet to be resolved,” curator Maria Luisa Frisa noted during a preview, as reported by ARTnews. With these questions at the forefront, “Memorabile. Ipermoda” examines the growing role of technology in design, including fabric production; the pivotal role of creative directors within luxury brands, who wield significant influence over both narrative and aesthetic directions; and the emergence of independent designers.

In addition to the striking designs and imagery, Frisa has curated a playlist that serves as the exhibition’s soundtrack, played exclusively in shuffle mode to create unpredictable moments of harmony and dissonance. “Memorabile. Ipermoda” will be on display at the MAXXI Museum in Rome until March 23, 2025.
