A Mikel Merino goal in extra time secured a dramatic 2-1 victory for Spain over Germany in a thrilling quarter-final match on Friday, featuring the two most successful nations in European Championship history.
The game reached the 119th minute and seemed destined for a penalty shootout until Merino, a substitute, headed in the winning goal from Dani Olmo's cross, shattering the hopes of most spectators at the Stuttgart Arena.
After a goalless first half, Olmo gave Spain the lead six minutes into the second half with a first-time shot to the bottom corner. However, Germany managed to force extra time with an 89th-minute goal from Florian Wirtz.
Despite Germany's relentless push for an equalizer, Spain held firm and advanced to the semi-finals, where they will face either Portugal or France, who are set to play later on Friday.
