Singer Gary Phelan, who gained fame through his participation in Fame Academy, has passed away at the age of 42 in Dubai. His friends confirmed his death on social media last month, though the cause of death remains undisclosed. Phelan was a contestant in the second season of Fame Academy in 2003.
Phelan's manager, Simon Hanning, revealed on Facebook that the singer was discovered in his Dubai apartment. Hanning subsequently initiated a fundraiser to cover the expenses of repatriating Phelan's body to the UK, as reported by the Daily Mail.
In his August 15 Facebook post, Hanning wrote: "I am deeply saddened to share the tragic news that my friend and artist I managed, Gary Phelan, was found in his apartment in Dubai over the weekend. I am beyond devastated and cannot yet express how this news has affected his family and friends. He was cherished by many, and I already miss our conversations, him sending me his latest songs, and our usual banter." Hanning continued, "We accomplished some incredible things together; he was everything one could ask for in a friend. I am truly heartbroken."
Hanning later updated supporters on the Just Giving page, stating: "Dear all, we did it! Gary was brought home to the UK over the weekend. I have spoken with Gary's family, who have been overwhelmed by the heartfelt messages and generosity shown as we all united for a common goal. There will be a further update from the family with details of Gary's funeral in a few days.
But for now, thank you all very much. I never imagined we would reach our targets so quickly; every person who helped played a part. Big love to you all and to Gary."
Fame Academy, hosted by Patrick Kielty and Cat Deeley, was a reality TV series where talented musicians lived together in a house and competed for a prize over several weeks.
