Eleven individuals perished in China's eastern Shandong province on Tuesday when a school bus veered out of control at a bustling pedestrian intersection, as reported by broadcaster CCTV. Disturbing video footage captured the scene, depicting bodies strewn across the roadway and trapped beneath the bus. Among the deceased were six parents and five children, with one other person in critical condition. CCTV also noted that more than two dozen individuals sustained injuries.
The Dongping Police Department issued a statement via WeChat, detailing that a vehicle tasked with transporting students lost control at a junction in Dongping County, Shandong, on Tuesday morning. The authorities are currently investigating the incident. This tragedy follows another in July, where a motor vehicle struck pedestrians in Hunan province, resulting in eight fatalities. In May, a bus carrying 45 passengers, including 39 students, collided with a truck in Jiangsu province, partly due to negligent driving.
China's People's Daily Newspaper highlighted on Sunday that the country is implementing measures at primary and secondary schools nationwide to enhance student safety. These measures include addressing safety hazards on campus, ensuring the safe operation of school buses, and conducting traffic patrols.
