A tragic incident unfolded at an Alabama HBCU during a milestone homecoming weekend on Sunday morning, resulting in one fatality. Gunfire erupted on Tuskegee University’s campus as the streets were bustling with students, alumni, and community members celebrating the school’s 100th homecoming. Police were dispatched to West Commons, one of the university’s apartment complexes, following reports of shots fired at 1200 West Montgomery Road. The victim was identified as a “non-university individual,” according to a statement from the university to The Post. Several individuals were injured, including Tuskegee students, and were promptly transported to nearby hospitals. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation has taken charge of the ongoing investigation into the shooting. Tuskegee University, situated approximately 39 miles east of Montgomery, Alabama, remains in the spotlight as details about the number of shooters and any potential arrests remain undisclosed.
The university’s homecoming football game against Miles College, held earlier in the day, saw a crowd of approximately 47,300 people, far exceeding the official capacity of 10,000 at Alumni Stadium. This incident echoes a similar event from the previous year, where four people were injured during a shooting at an “unauthorized party” at West Commons, leading to the cancellation of classes. One student, Mechel Winters, criticized the university’s security measures, stating, “Them saying that the party was unauthorized to kind of switch the blame unto us, it’s crazy because even if it was an authorized party, with the security measures we have in place, the same thing could have happened.” Winters further expressed disappointment, saying, “I just expected it to be a safe place because we are on campus, and there should be security measures in place.”
