Hamas's armed wing announced on Saturday that a female Israeli hostage had been killed in a combat zone in northern Gaza. The Israeli military is currently investigating this claim. A spokesman for the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, Abu Obeida, stated that contact had been re-established with the woman's captors after a break of several weeks. It was confirmed that the hostage had been killed in an area of northern Gaza where the Israeli army has been conducting operations.
Abu Obeida's statement did not provide further details about the hostage, including how or when she was killed. The Israeli army informed AFP that it is looking into the claim. During last year's Hamas attack, which triggered the Gaza war, militants took 251 hostages. Of these, 97 are still held in Gaza, including 34 who have been confirmed dead.
