Fiat is recalling 15,835 124 Spiders due to potential issues with their airbags deploying with 'excessive force.' The issue stems from the airbag control module software, which may incorrectly trigger a dual-stage front airbag deployment instead of a single-stage deployment in certain crash scenarios. This non-compliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards could lead to neck injuries, as the dual-stage deployment might exceed the specified crash protection performance criteria.
The problem is linked to the airbag control modules, which have incorrect accelerometer voltage specifications. These modules were produced between March 31, 2016, and August 31, 2020, covering the 2017 to 2020 model years. According to the Safety Recall Report, Mazda—the assembler of the 124 Spider—first notified Stellantis about a potential airbag issue in July. After investigating the matter, Mazda decided to initiate a voluntary safety recall earlier this month.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles plans to notify affected owners in November. Service technicians will update the airbag control module software with the correct specifications at no cost to the owners. If you suspect your 124 Spider might be affected, visit the NHTSA's dedicated recall site and enter your VIN for more information.
