Filipino expatriates in the UAE will be able to participate in the Philippines' upcoming midterm elections through an online voting system, as announced on Wednesday.

This development means that the Filipino community in the UAE will no longer need to stand in long queues to cast their votes during the polls scheduled for 2025. The Philippine Consulate-General in Dubai shared the Comelec guidelines for the new online voting system, which will be implemented for the first time next year.

The official election day is set for May 12, 2025, but for Filipinos worldwide, including those in the UAE, the overseas absentee voting period will extend for 30 days, from April 13 to May 12, 2025. During these elections, the Philippines will elect 12 senators and members of the House of Representatives, along with thousands of local officials. However, overseas voters will only be able to vote for senators and party-list representatives.

To participate in the online voting process, eligible voters must first register. Pre-enrolment on the Comelec's voting portal will commence on February 27, 2025. Voting can be conducted using a mobile phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop, and can be done through any web browser. In the event of any technical issues, voters can still cast their ballots physically at the embassy in Abu Dhabi or the consulate-general in Dubai, where OVCS kiosks will be available.
