Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has emerged as one of the most anticipated games of 2024, achieving top sales and garnering multiple award nominations for The Game Awards. As the second installment in the ambitious Remake trilogy, fans have been eager to know if downloadable content (DLC) is on the horizon. However, the game's director, Naoki Hamaguchi, has confirmed that there are currently no plans for any expansions for Rebirth—and there's a compelling reason behind this decision.
In an interview with the Daily Star, Hamaguchi discussed the Final Fantasy series and explained the team's focus. He stated that their primary goal is to expedite the release of the as-yet-unnamed third part of the trilogy. "We definitely hear the fans' desire for DLC, and I completely understand their wishes," Hamaguchi said. "However, from my perspective, what fans are most eager to see is the third part of the series as soon as possible."
The first part of the trilogy, launched in 2020 for the PS4, included a DLC a year later featuring Yuffie as a playable character, titled Intermission. This DLC was later integrated into the PS5 version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, renamed Intergrade. Given the game's immense scale, fans might have expected a similar approach for Rebirth. Nevertheless, Hamaguchi emphasized that the development team is fully committed to completing the third game swiftly.
"That's why we've decided not to allocate development resources to creating additional DLC episodes at this time," he added. "Our main focus is on releasing the third game as quickly as possible. I want [Remake Chapter 3] to come out swiftly, and then we can consider exploring other stories in greater depth."
