In recent years, Final Fantasy games have gradually expanded their reach beyond the PlayStation ecosystem. Final Fantasy 15 was ported to Xbox and PC, and Final Fantasy 16 was released on PC just last September. However, the Final Fantasy Remake and Rebirth series have not yet made their way to Xbox, a situation that co-director Naoki Hamaguchi hopes to change.

Speaking with GamesRadar, Hamaguchi expressed his desire to bring the Final Fantasy Remake series to as many fans as possible, emphasizing the industry shift towards multiplatform availability. As an Xbox enthusiast himself, Hamaguchi is keen to see more Final Fantasy titles on the platform. "In terms of Final Fantasy 7, there's nothing concrete we can announce at the moment, but I definitely want to bring Final Fantasy 7 and the Remake series to as many players as possible," he said, despite not having the final say on the matter. "We aim to create an environment where more players can enjoy these games in the future, and we are actively considering this direction."

It appears that Square Enix is moving towards greater multiplatform support. For instance, Octopath Traveler 2 arrived on Xbox over a year after its initial launch on PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC. "This shift goes beyond just Final Fantasy 7. It reflects a broader change in the industry, where there are now numerous platforms and environments for gamers," Hamaguchi noted. "The gaming landscape is much more diverse now, which is likely why our CEO, Mr. [Takashi] Kiryu, decided to move towards a more multiplatform approach—it's the direction the industry is heading."

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been nominated for several awards at The Game Awards 2024, including the prestigious Game of the Year.
