A flash flood originating from the mountains of southwestern Saudi Arabia devastated a section of a bridge in Jizan province, resulting in one fatality on Saturday, as reported by state media.
State television news channel Al-Ekhbariya broadcasted footage of two vehicles engulfed by the floodwaters, with one vehicle being crushed by a fallen bridge support. The channel also reported that several individuals were injured due to the bridge collapse at a crucial intersection inland from the Red Sea port city of Jizan.
The National Centre for Meteorology issued a warning on Saturday, alerting that Jizan province could expect further heavy rainfall, with thunderstorms predicted in the mountainous regions. Jizan province is characterized by contrasting climates; the narrow coastal plain along the Red Sea is known for some of the highest temperatures in Saudi Arabia, whereas the inland mountains, which ascend to 3,000 meters (10,000 feet), are considerably cooler, experiencing significant rainfall even during the summer months.
