Flavor Flav alleges that his festive spirit was shattered when NBC officials purportedly ejected him from the Backstreet Boys' dressing room at the Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting in New York City on Wednesday night. The holiday spectacle featured a host of celebrities ushering in the festive season, including the popular boy band and Kelly Clarkson, who emceed the event. However, despite the joyous atmosphere, the rapper claims he was met with security when he went backstage to visit the Backstreet Boys.
“I feel weird… I was invited to the Rockefeller Tree Lighting tonight and I was escorted to see my boys… THE BACKSTREET BOYS… and we were backstage in their dressing room… security came up to me and said: @nbc Does not want me in this area and I need to leave,” the “Fight The Power” hitmaker, 65, wrote on X in a now-deleted post. “At the same time… their social media woman came up and asked to capture social content.”
“What did I ever do to NBC or anyone?? all I ever do is try to spread joy and love… and I think I did that for NBC at the Olympics,” he added, referring to his work with NBC during this year’s Paris Olympic Games. The “Bring the Noise” rapper promptly deleted the contentious post but swiftly followed up with another. “I deleted the tweet… but my spirit is broken,” he wrote in another post.
The Post has reached out to NBC and representatives for the Backstreet Boys for comment. Flavor Flav, whose real name is William Drayton Jr., mentioned that the band interceded on his behalf with security, but he was later spotted watching the 74-foot Norway Spruce illuminate the Manhattan skyline from the audience. “Christmas in the city, ain’t nothing like the Rockefeller tree lighting,” he remarked.
Thousands of visitors from across the country and abroad queued for hours in hopes of catching a glimpse of the renowned tree. As the tree lights were switched on at 10 p.m., a choir performed “Joy to the World.” Clarkson sang her festive hit “Underneath the Tree,” while the Backstreet Boys delivered their version of the Nat King Cole Trio’s “The Christmas Song,” as well as “Last Christmas” by Wham! Among the performers, Jennifer Hudson sang a jazz rendition of “Winter Wonderland” from the rooftop of Radio City Music Hall. Grammy-winner Coco Jones also took to the stage, alongside Thalia and Raye. The iconic Radio City Rockettes also put on a performance.
