The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to receive a sequel, but it remains uncertain whether Foreman Spike will be part of it. Sebastian Maniscalco, the comedian and actor who voiced the character in the first film, recently shared his doubts about returning for the follow-up. Maniscalco revealed that during a visit to Universal Studios theme park with his kids, he hoped to find a Foreman Spike stuffed animal for them. However, the store lacked any merchandise featuring his character, leading him to believe that Foreman Spike may not return.
"No Spike, no nothing. It stopped at me. It was every other character, and then me, I have no animal, no stuffy, no nothing. So, the fact that I didn't have a stuffed animal is not giving me a lot of confidence that I'm coming back for the sequel. I haven't heard anything, so your guess is as good as mine," Maniscalco told ScreenRant with a laugh. While it's still possible that Foreman Spike could make an appearance, no returning characters have been officially confirmed yet. However, Chris Pratt is expected to reprise his role as Mario.
The 2023 release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed over $1.36 billion globally, making it the second highest-grossing film of the year, just behind Barbie ($1.446 billion). In March 2024, Nintendo and Illumination announced they are collaborating on another Mario movie, described as "based on the world of Super Mario Bros." Whether it will be titled The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 or something else remains to be seen. Rumors have also circulated about a potential Donkey Kong movie featuring Seth Rogen. The new film is scheduled for release on April 3, 2026 in the US.
Illumination's Chris Meledandri and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto will return as producers, while directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who helmed the 2023 film, will also come back for the sequel. Universal Pictures will continue its role as co-financier and distributor alongside Nintendo. In addition to this animated Mario movie, Nintendo and Sony are reportedly working on a live-action Zelda film.
