Malaysia's former prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, aged nearly 100, has been admitted to the hospital due to persistent coughing, according to his aide who spoke to AFP on Thursday.
Sufi Yusoff informed that Mahathir is anticipated to receive treatment over the next few days, having been hospitalized since Monday. Mahathir, who celebrated his 99th birthday last week, has faced multiple cardiac issues in recent years and has undergone several bypass operations. He was hospitalized for nearly three months earlier this year.
Born on July 10, 1925, Mahathir has held the position of prime minister twice. He first assumed office as Malaysia's fourth leader in 1981 and served until 2003. Subsequently, at the age of 92, he returned to the role from 2018 to 2020.
