India's federal police announced the arrest of the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata, Sandip Ghosh, on graft allegations. This follows an investigation into the horrific rape and murder of a young female doctor at the institution. Ghosh, who stepped down as principal shortly after the incident came to light, was detained on Monday for financial misconduct, according to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI also apprehended two suppliers of hospital equipment and a confidant of Ghosh in relation to the case. Attempts by Reuters to contact Ghosh or his attorney were unsuccessful. The case of the rape and murder has sparked massive protests among doctors, calling for enhanced safety measures for women in the workplace and justice for the 31-year-old victim, whose body was discovered over three weeks prior. Despite the implementation of stricter laws following the 2012 bus gang-rape and murder in New Delhi, activists argue that the Kolkata incident underscores the ongoing issue of sexual violence against women in India. A police volunteer, tasked with assisting police personnel and their families with hospital admissions, was arrested last month and charged with the crime.
