After years of speculation, Fortnite's much-anticipated first-person mode will finally be unveiled in a few days with the launch of Fortnite Ballistic on December 11.
Fortnite Ballistic is not a battle royale mode, but rather a 5v5 round-based shooter reminiscent of Counter-Strike, where one team will attempt to detonate a Rift Point Device bomb, while the opposing team will try to disarm it.
In Fortnite Ballistic, there are no respawns—the round concludes when an entire team is wiped out, or the Rift Point Device is either disarmed or explodes. Players begin each round with a pistol and some credits, which are used to purchase weapons between rounds. During this time, each player also selects a gadget, such as bubble shields and proximity mines.
If you survive a round, you retain your gear; if you die, you must purchase new items. It's important to note that if you win a round by detonating the Rift Point Device, you might still perish in the explosion, adding an intriguing dynamic for teams defending the armed bomb from those attempting to disarm it.
The first team to win seven rounds claims victory in the match. In its announcement, Epic describes Ballistic as being in "early access," rather than a fully developed new mode. This aligns with the fact that Ballistic will launch with just one map, the city-based Skyline 10.
Fortnite Ballistic will be available in both ranked and unranked formats. In ranked mode, the game will not fill your team with new players if your allies leave; however, if your game crashes or disconnects, you'll have a three-minute grace period to reconnect, a feature Fortnite has never offered in an official mode before. Additionally, there are penalties for leaving, including a short matchmaking ban.
Despite being a first-person mode, Fortnite Ballistic will support most of Fortnite's cosmetics, including skins and emotes.
