Epic Games is set to make significant changes to how progression works in Fortnite's various modes in the near future. Beginning with all new passes introduced after the current season concludes, players will advance through any pass they own using XP. This means that Festival points and Lego studs will be phased out, and players will be able to progress all their current passes simultaneously by earning XP in any mode. This shift will commence with the new Festival pass, now renamed the 'Music pass,' launching on November 2, and the Lego Pass will be updated with this change on December 1, marking the start of Fortnite Chapter 6.
In addition to the progression changes, the structure of the passes themselves will also be altered. The current Festival and Lego passes, along with mini-pass events like the summer's Pirates of the Caribbean event, have all utilized an 11-tier template divided into free and paid tracks. New passes introduced after Chapter 6 begins in December will abandon this template, adopting a new single track that will include both paid and free items. Similarly, the battle pass is being streamlined, eliminating the battle star currency and implementing a more straightforward progression system.
Essentially, the battle passes, Lego passes, and Music passes will now share a similar format, although the Lego and Music passes will likely remain shorter than the battle passes. Furthermore, starting in Chapter 6, Fortnite will no longer offer the option to purchase levels on its passes. Instead, players will be able to buy specific items directly, though they will still need to purchase the pass itself first. Theoretically, this means players could potentially purchase the tier 100 skin at the end of the season without having to buy the entire pass for $100+.
The passes will still expire on their stated end dates, and players will not be able to purchase or progress them after their respective seasons end. This change could be seen as a quality of life improvement, as it means players won't need to engage with Festival mode at all to complete the pass for that mode. However, these changes will likely be accompanied by the removal or significant reduction of passive XP from Festival and Lego Fortnite. Since quests in these modes will now award XP instead of mode-specific currency, passive XP becomes redundant. Given that many players used these modes to level up while AFK, it's possible that this change is being made, at least in part, to discourage that practice.
The passive rate of XP gain in these modes has been quite generous, but overall progression may slow down once these changes take effect. We'll have to wait and see how it plays out to determine if this is a positive change.
