In 2007, Aasif Durani relocated from Karachi to Dubai to manage his uncle's timber business, never envisioning that he would one day foster an Olympian. 'I've never engaged in serious sports, and our family has no sports heritage,' remarked the Pakistani entrepreneur based in Dubai. However, observing his energetic two-year-old son, Muhammad Ahmed Durrani, his uncle suggested enrolling the child in a sports program.
Durani then introduced Ahmed to swimming, discovering that his son had a natural affinity for the water. 'Ahmed was a lively child, but in the pool, he was serene and focused,' Durani reminisced. This aquatic passion quickly translated into a series of victories in school competitions, culminating in Ahmed's selection for the Pakistan team at the Asian Games in China.
Now 18, Ahmed has achieved the pinnacle of his career by qualifying for the Paris Olympics, where he will compete in the 200-meter freestyle. He attributes his success to his family's unwavering support—his father's relentless efforts to provide everything necessary for his athletic development, and his mother's dedication, waking up at 4 am to drive him to morning training.
In a conversation with City Times, Ahmed reflected on his journey from collecting coins at the bottom of the pool to competing at the highest level. He emphasized the rigorous training schedule that includes morning and evening sessions, balancing his swimming career with academics at the Dubai English Speaking College.
Ahmed's realization of his Olympic potential came during the Nationals in Pakistan, where his impressive performances indicated his chances of qualifying for Paris. The confirmation of his qualification came late at night, following a tense wait due to the competition from another Pakistani swimmer in Canada.
