A gas explosion in a coal mine located in Iran's South Khorasan Province has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 28 lives and left 17 others injured, according to state television reports on Sunday.
The catastrophic event was triggered by a methane gas explosion within two sections of the mine operated by the Madanjoo company, as stated by state TV. At the time of the explosion, 69 workers were present in these sections.
The head of Iran's Red Crescent informed state TV that 17 of the injured individuals have been transported to the hospital, while 24 people remain unaccounted for. The explosion took place at 9pm local time (5.30pm GMT) on Saturday, as reported by state media.
President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. In televised remarks, he stated, 'I have spoken with ministers and we will do our utmost to follow up on this tragic incident.'
