Space, the final frontier... for Gears of War 6? This concept was reportedly on the table years ago when Rod Fergusson, the former head of The Coalition, was still at the studio. However, plans seem to have shifted, as the upcoming installment in the franchise is Gears of War: E-Day.
During an appearance on IGN's Podcast Unlocked, Fergusson—now overseeing the Diablo series—shared his vision for Gears of War 6. "What I wanted to do with Gears 6 was to take players off Sera and explore what that could mean for the rest of the galaxy—at least the rest of the solar system," he said. Fergusson was quick to clarify that this didn't involve Kait Diaz and Marcus Fenix traveling between planets. Gears of War 5 hinted at ancient, Russian-like technology for leaving Sera, so the aim appeared to be simply moving the action to a new location or planet to heighten the stakes. "It wasn't like we were just going to start Mass Effect-ing this," Fergusson noted.
Last year, Fergusson disclosed that he had drafted an outline for Gears of War 6 before departing for Activision. He acknowledged that The Coalition might have scrapped his plans, which he was "fine" with. While the direction of Gears of War 6 remains uncertain, The Coalition is currently focusing on the past. Gears of War: E-Day was unveiled at the Xbox Games Showcase in June. This prequel will feature a young Marcus Fenix battling the Locust during Emergence Day, set 14 years before the original Gears of War.
Fergusson considers Gears of War: E-Day to be "really smart" and is intrigued by the challenge of not having the Lancer in the prequel. He believes that fans of the cover-based shooter come for the iconic chainsaw gun.
There is currently no release date for Gears of War: E-Day.
