Feeling peachy! A fortunate Powerball player in Georgia hit the jackpot on Wednesday night, winning an estimated $478 million and ending the state's nearly decade-long streak without a lottery jackpot win. The winning numbers were 2, 15, 27, 29, 39, and the red Powerball 20.
After matching all six numbers, the lucky winner has the choice to receive the $478 million prize over 29 years or opt for the one-time lump sum of approximately $230.6 million. The odds of winning the Powerball grand prize are a staggering 1 in 292,201,338.
In addition to the jackpot winner, two ticketholders in Pennsylvania and Texas matched all five white balls, each winning $1 million. This win marks the end of a two-month period without a Powerball jackpot winner, following a $44.3 million win by a California player on August 19, 2024.
Over the past 14 years, four jackpot-winning tickets have been sold in Georgia. Notably, William and Heather ten Broeke won a $246 million prize on September 17, 2016, choosing the cash value of $165,613,510.93. The couple, who were prompted by Heather to buy a lottery ticket while shopping, planned to use their winnings for travel, family, investments, and charitable donations.
Another significant win in Georgia was a $77.1 million ticket sold in June 2011, which remains unclaimed. Georgia lottery players typically have 180 days to claim their winnings, as per the state's lottery regulations.
Meanwhile, an anonymous New Jersey player who purchased a $1.13 billion Mega Millions ticket in March still has not claimed the prize, with just over five months remaining to do so.
