Fans of Ghost of Tsushima were thrilled to see a follow-up game announced during Sony's latest State of Play. The upcoming title, Ghost of Yotei, is set to feature a new protagonist and a different setting. Although much about the game remains under wraps, the creative team behind Ghost of Yotei aims to avoid the repetitive nature that plagued the original title. "One of the challenges in creating an open-world game is the tendency for players to repeat the same actions," explained creative director Jason Connell in an interview with The New York Times. "We are working to ensure that each experience is distinct and memorable."

A significant aspect of this new approach will involve giving players more control over the decisions made by the game's heroine, Atsu. Set centuries after Ghost of Tsushima, Atsu has adopted the Ghost persona as her own. Players will have the freedom to choose how Atsu engages in combat, whether through traditional melee weapons or by employing firearms. Nate Fox, the game's other creative director, expressed his intention to introduce a heightened sense of danger inspired by Sucker Punch's visit to Shiretoko National Park. "Within the park, visitors are warned about the presence of bears through a safety video," Fox recounted. "The combination of the park's stunning beauty and the constant awareness of potential bear encounters created an electrifying atmosphere... We aim to capture that sense of peril in our game."

Ghost of Yotei is slated for release on PlayStation 5 in 2025, though an exact date has yet to be announced.
