Today, NetherRealm Studios hosted the latest edition of the Kombat Kast—the semi-regular livestream that showcases new characters and features coming to Mortal Kombat 1 in the near future. Despite Halloween being last month, the presentation continued the spooky theme with a full reveal of Ghostface from Scream. Interestingly, this character is actually three Ghostfaces in one, with two of them hailing from the Mortal Kombat universe.
The Kombat Kast began with a gameplay trailer for the new fighter, which demonstrated various moves and combos, a fourth-wall-breaking Fatality, and a hint at his Animality where he transforms into a buzzard. Following the trailer, it was explained that the original Ghostface—the one transported to the Mortal Kombat timeline—is the primary fighter, but he can summon other Ghostfaces to assist him in battle. According to NetherRealm lead QA analyst Stephanie Brownback, these other Ghostfaces are not anonymous but are recognizable characters from the Mortal Kombat canon. The only clues provided during the stream were that both were recruited from Kano's Black Dragon clan, with the male Ghostface known as the 'Black Dragon Enforcer' and the female as the 'Black Dragon Assassin.' Each of these Black Dragon Ghostfaces has 'clues' and 'Easter eggs' that appear while they are on-screen, leaving it up to the players to decipher their identities.
The Kombat Kast also unveiled new features and adjustments to the roster, including fresh moves and abilities for characters like Ashrah, Smoke, and Sub-Zero, among others. Additionally, a replay takeover feature was highlighted, allowing players to rewatch a recent online match and 'take over' for a brief period to analyze the situation and strategize for future matches.
Mortal Kombat 1 is currently available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Ghostface will officially join the roster on November 26, while those with early access through the Premium or Kollector's Edition will be able to play as the Scream killer one week earlier on November 19.
