The New York Giants are making a change at quarterback, benching struggling Daniel Jones and opting to start Tommy DeVito against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week. This move aims to snap a five-game losing streak, according to a source familiar with the decision.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll had previously hinted at a potential change after the team, now 2-8, went into their bye week following an overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers (3-7) in Germany on November 10. The 27-year-old Jones has had a challenging season with 10 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions, including two in the red zone during the 20-17 loss in Munich. His recent performance has been lackluster, with a record of 3-13 in his last 16 starts, and the Giants currently rank last in the league in scoring, averaging just 15.6 points per game.
Jones signed a four-year, $160 million contract after leading the Giants to an unexpected playoff appearance in Daboll's first season in 2022. However, he saw limited action last season due to a neck injury and later an ACL tear. His contract includes a $23 million injury guarantee if he fails to pass a physical in the offseason. This season, Jones has struggled behind a poor offensive line and has been inconsistent. DeVito, who has been listed as the third quarterback every game this season, has now leapfrogged veteran Drew Lock, largely due to his performance as a rookie free-agent starter out of Illinois, where he went 3-3 after Jones and backup Tyrod Taylor were injured.
With seven games remaining, there is a possibility that Jones may not start again this season. The Giants are positioned to have a high draft pick and are likely to consider drafting a quarterback.
