David López scored Girona’s first-ever Champions League goal, but the Catalan side lost 3-2 at home to Feyenoord on Wednesday in a thrilling match that featured missed penalties and two own goals.
López put Girona ahead midway through the first half, but Yangel Herrera’s own goal and a strike from teenager Antoni Milambo turned the tide in favor of the Dutch visitors. Ayase Ueda missed a penalty for Feyenoord, and Bojan Miovski did the same for Girona, before former Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek equalized for the home side at 2-2. However, Ladislav Krejci’s own goal restored Feyenoord’s lead, and they held on to secure Girona’s second consecutive defeat in their maiden Champions League campaign.
In another match, Ademola Lookman was instrumental in Atalanta’s 3-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk. Lookman scored one goal and played a key role in the other two, helping the Italians dominate their Ukrainian opponents in Gelsenkirchen. Atalanta now has four points from two games, having drawn 0-0 with Arsenal in their opener, while Shakhtar remains on one point after a scoreless draw against Bologna.
Atalanta took the lead in the 21st minute when Lookman’s cross found Berat Djimsiti, who controlled the ball and scored past goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk. The Italian side doubled their lead just before halftime when Sead Kolasinac passed to Lookman, who shot through Marlon Gomes’ legs and into the bottom corner. The game was effectively sealed three minutes into the second half when Lookman assisted Davide Zappacosta, whose cross was headed home by Raoul Bellanova.
With the score at 3-0, Lookman was substituted with over half an hour remaining, having done his job for the night. The final score mirrored the result from their last Champions League encounter in 2019.
More matches are set to kick off at 8pm (BST), including Leipzig v Juventus and Lille v Real Madrid.
