"We warmly welcome all Icon players. With such esteemed figures leading each team, we are certain that the upcoming matches will provide an unforgettable experience for millions of chess enthusiasts," expressed Sameer Pathak, CEO of Global Chess League. Additional superstar men, women, and prodigy players will be announced in the coming weeks, further enhancing the anticipation for the player draft.
Carlsen expressed his enthusiasm for the second season, stating, "The first season in Dubai was exceptional. Chess has traditionally been an individual sport, but the team concept introduced by the Global Chess League is invigorating. I am eager to play again with the Alpine SG Pipers." The league welcomes two new Icon players: Hikaru Nakamura, a highly popular and dynamic player, joining American Gambits, and Anish Giri making his debut with PBG Alaskan Knights.
Viswanathan Anand, another five-time world champion, returns as the Icon player for Ganges Grandmasters. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, the Icon player of the first season's finalists, Mumba Masters, will continue to lead his team. Ian Nepomniachtchi will serve as the Icon player for Triveni Continental Kings.
Anand commented on the inaugural season's success, "Chess is played globally, and its broadcast in this distinctive format will boost its popularity." He added, "I anticipate fans witnessing fierce contests between teams showcasing their best chess. I'm thrilled to play for Ganges Grandmasters again." The league will host at least three high-profile matches daily, featuring Icon players leading their teams. The franchise-based league comprises six teams, each with six players: one Icon player, two superstar male players, two superstar female players, and one prodigy player.
