Earlier this year, over 350 runners from around the globe converged on the UAE to participate in the first-ever trail race in the rugged mountains of Ras Al Khaimah. Initiated at the Wadi Ghalilah Dam in Jebel Jais, the G.O.A.T race spanned 50km and 30km, with elevations soaring up to 3,300m. Dana Matar, co-founder of Peak Sports and the race organizer, described it as one of the most challenging technical trail races at such altitudes in the region. Both the male and female winners, hailing from Russia, were taken aback by the terrain's demands, according to Matar.
"People often visit the UAE for its bustling city life without realizing the stunning beauty and challenges of its trails in Ras Al Khaimah, Hatta, and Fujairah. But that's evolving as the local trail running scene expands," said the 39-year-old trail runner, who has over a decade of experience in the sport. In recent years, trail running has transitioned from a niche activity to a mainstream endurance sport, with over 20 million registered trail runners worldwide. The UAE has embraced this trend, witnessing a rise in athletes opting for rocky terrains, muddy paths, dunes, and mountainous landscapes over city pavements.
This surge in interest prompted Matar to establish her sports company in 2022, focusing on international-standard trail races and fostering a community of adventure enthusiasts across the region. The company has been expanding its race lineup, introducing the Al Qudra Trail Race during Ramadan and the Last 1 Standing, a 12-hour endurance challenge in Hatta next month. "The appeal of trail running lies in its ability to reconnect you with nature and bring you fully into the present moment. Many are turning to the outdoors for both physical and mental well-being. Being out on the trails offers a sense of freedom and clarity," Matar explained, adding, "The growing interest in trail running is also fueled by the sport's inclusive community."
During the cooler months, the trail running community in the UAE grows with new members eager to try the sport. Groups and clubs across the country have made it more accessible to runners of all skill levels. One of the largest trail running communities in the GCC, Trail Runners DXB, boasts over 1,000 members spread across various WhatsApp groups. Samer Bou Kaedbey, co-founder of this group, noted that their weekend runs typically attract between 35 and 50 participants. "We see around five new faces every weekend, ranging from beginners to experienced athletes. Our community comprises both UAE nationals and expatriates coming together to share experiences and explore trails," said the 35-year-old certified personal trainer.
The UAE's growing trail running community and diverse race routes have positioned it as an emerging destination for global endurance athletes. The country's landscapes offer a variety of trail experiences, from desert runs and coastal trails to mountainous terrain. Government organizations like Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) and Dubai Sports Council (DSC) have been promoting the sport through events and investments in trail development, ensuring safety and accessibility for runners.
Dubai-based running coach Ivana Kolaric consistently trains 15-20 runners for various local and international ultra-trail competitions. "On the trails, it doesn't matter if you're fast or slow; you can still enjoy an amazing workout. The feeling of tackling nature's obstacles and pushing through is exhilarating for many," said the medal-winning athlete and founder of the coaching club, Race Craft. Experts also emphasize the importance of proper gear and safety. Matar noted that their races always have a mandatory gear list, and runners should prioritize their safety and the environment while running or hiking in nature.
