GMG, a UAE-based conglomerate, has announced that it has reached 89% green energy usage in its logistics operations between 2022 and 2023, thereby avoiding over 2,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This achievement underscores GMG's dedication to integrating sustainability into its core business strategy and operations. The details were unveiled in GMG's inaugural Sustainability Report.

The report outlines GMG's progress in achieving the goals set forth in its corporate sustainability strategy, 'Make a Difference'. This strategic framework is in line with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UAE's Green Agenda-2030, which aims to reduce the country's emissions to less than 100 kWh by the end of the decade. Mohammad A. Baker, Deputy Chairman and CEO of GMG, emphasized the importance of a robust ESG framework for driving business evolution and creating a positive impact on both people and the environment.

The report provides a comprehensive overview of the company's efforts across three key pillars: Planet Forward, Inspire People, and Own Change. Under the Planet Forward pillar, GMG reduced its fuel usage by 13% through efficient route mapping and increased its clean energy mix by 7.5%. The company also saved over 1 million plastic bottles by installing water filters in its Dubai offices and utilized 89% green energy in its logistics operations through rooftop solar installations.

GMG successfully treated and repurposed over 685,000 gallons of wastewater, representing 20.8% of its total water consumption. The company also reduced paper usage by over 428kg and replaced 35,000 sq.m. of plastic tape with paper tape, contributing to its goal of zero-waste-to-landfill. In terms of gender equity, GMG achieved near pay parity at executive and senior levels and extended maternity leave to 90 days for all female employees.

GMG partnered with 1,143 UAE farms to support local agriculture and ensured that 100% of its private label Basic Collection teams were trained on responsible sourcing. The collection line uses eco-friendly materials that reduce the environmental footprint by lasting longer and using less water and energy during production. Razan Akrouk, Chief People Officer of GMG, highlighted the transparency and detailed overview provided by the Sustainability Report.
