The latest installment in the Monsterverse cinematic universe, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, is set to receive a new 4K Blu-ray release, featuring an exclusive steelbook cover. Priced at $30, this Walmart-exclusive edition is scheduled for release on December 3. While the epic showdown between Godzilla and Kong is more concise in this film—though you still witness the king of monsters suplexing the ape wonder through a pyramid—The New Empire delivers an abundance of colossal kaiju battles. The movie delves deeper into the mythology of these titans, revealing that Kong is not the last of his kind. However, these Kong kaiju are under the rule of the Scar King, a tyrannical titan intent on conquering the surface world and possessing a powerful titan that can challenge even a supercharged Kong.
This 4K release of The New Empire includes the film on a standard Blu-ray disc, along with a code for a digital streaming version. Bonus materials include various extras. In addition to the Walmart-exclusive steelbook version, a standard 4K edition is available for $23 (previously $30) at Amazon. For those looking to catch up on the series before the third Godzilla X Kong movie, which is in development and set to release in March 2027, the rest of the Monsterverse films are worth acquiring. The easiest way to collect them all is with the Godzilla X Kong: Five-Film Collection. The 4K Blu-ray edition is on sale for $100 (originally $110) at Amazon, featuring Godzilla 2014, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. Alternatively, you can purchase each film individually on Blu-ray.
The only Monsterverse media not included in this collection is the Monarch TV series available on Apple TV Plus. While this Hollywood adaptation of Godzilla has produced some of the most entertaining blockbusters of the past decade, Japanese filmmakers continue to release new Godzilla movies, with Godzilla Minus One being the latest—and one of the best. Godzilla Minus One received critical acclaim for its return to the series' dark thematic roots and won an Academy Award for its stunning visual effects. The 4K Blu-ray edition of Godzilla Minus One is available for $30 (reduced from $50) at Amazon. For those interested in Godzilla's earlier years, the Godzilla: The Showa Era Films Criterion Collection is available for $225 at Amazon. This special edition Blu-ray includes 15 Godzilla films released between 1954 and 1975, including the original black-and-white horror film that launched the franchise. If the full collection is too costly, preorders are open for Criterion Collection's reprint of its Godzilla 1954 4K release, set to drop on November 5.
