Ilkay Gündogan expressed bewilderment over Manchester City's performance, labeling it as 'inexplicable' after they squandered a 3-0 lead with 75 minutes played, resulting in a 3-3 draw against Feyenoord in Tuesday's Champions League match at the Etihad.
Erling Haaland's brace and a goal from Gündogan had put Pep Guardiola's team firmly in control, aiming to end a five-game losing streak with a victory. However, two passing errors by Josko Gvardiol and a poorly timed rush out by Ederson allowed Anis Hadj Moussa, Santiago Giménez, and David Hancko to score for the visitors, securing a draw with the equalizer coming just a minute before the end of regular time.
Gündogan commented: 'The goals we conceded are inexplicable, especially the manner in which we conceded them. We can only blame ourselves. The situation, I don't know, the way things are going right now, it is a bit inexplicable.' He continued, 'Sometimes you struggle in some games, regardless of the opponent. Even when you play at home against a team you should dominate, you concede chances because every team is capable of creating something. But then, 75 minutes, 3-0 up and controlling the game, then ugh, giving it away so easily. They were ruthless. It's probably more our fault, but they just punished us in every situation they got, scoring three goals. Obviously, it's very tough to take.'
City currently sits in 15th place in the 36-team Champions League table with eight points, having played three games. Finishing in the top eight guarantees a spot in the last 16, while the next 16 teams enter playoffs. Guardiola's team faces Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, aware that a loss would see Arne Slot's leaders extend their lead to 11 points.
